Tailored solutions developed to integrate with architectural features, joinery and heritage details, ensuring lighting supports the space without distraction.
Theatres operate in carefully controlled environments.
Audiences spend extended periods in low light conditions, often within complex layouts that include balconies, aisles, stairways and back of house areas. Safety must be intuitive, immediate and unobtrusive.
Behind the scenes, technical and facilities teams are balancing heritage requirements, modern upgrades, compliance and the practicalities of maintaining systems within busy production schedules.
At Philip Payne, we provide discreet Theature emergency lighting that never steals the show, but is always ready when needed.
It must integrate seamlessly into the architecture and the performance environment while supporting safe, efficient operation.

DMX (short for Digital Multiplex) is a standard communication protocol used to control stage lighting and effects equipment in theatres concerts, and events.
DMX works by sending digital signals from a lighting controller (desk) to devices like dimmers, moving lights, LED fittings, fog machines and Exit Signs.
The DMX protocol sends data continuously through a radial circuit network, ensuring synchronized changes during performances
Each device is given a unique DMX address, allowing the controller to adjust settings such as brightness, colour, position, and effects.
Usually for Exit Signs the requirements are control the light output and dim accordingly with the effects of each perform.
A single DMX “universe” can control up to 512 channels, with data sent continuously through cables linking each device in a chain. This ensures synchronized, real-time control during performances.
This DMX system enables precise, repeatable control over complex lighting designs, enhancing mood, focus, and storytelling on stage while maintaining reliability and flexibility for live productions.
