Philip Payne Limited was established in 1968 and since this time has provided specialist and bespoke lighting products from a number of locations in the Solihull area as it has steadily grown.

In more recent years the company has focused on the quality end of the market forging strong relationships with many leading architectural building services and engineering practices resulting in the supply of products to many of the UK’s most iconic building projects often designing products specifically for individual projects.

Our History

1968

Philip Payne was established in Solihull by Philip Payne, his wife Isobel and son Michael.
First entry in the order book: 13th June 1968 £62-14 shillings for Robert Jenkins & Co.

1968

Planning permission granted for a manufacturing facility in Thornhill Road, Solihull

1973

Philip George Payne died aged 59

1978

Philip Payne was incorporated Co 1361523. Margaret Payne joined the company.

1980’s

The original crystal and decorative luminaires were phased out with the company focusing on hospital warning signs and back and edgelit signage luminaires .

1987

Production of edgelit exit signs for suspended ceilings increased and they were specified on numerous prestigious projects:

Pizza Express

Royal Opera House

The original FC luminaire was specified on the new development at Canary Wharf, London

1996

Acquired by F W Thorpe Plc

Achieved ISO9002

Philip Payne became a member of the Lighting Industry Federation

Moved to larger premises

Philip Payne Head Quarters

Philip Payne became a member of the Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting (ICEL)

Philip Payne moved to its current location -Thornhill House

2013

Philip Payne achieved Kitemark status for a core range of products.

2015

Premises expanded as demand grew for space

2018

Learning centre opened in the Factory

Philip Payne added to its Kitemark certificate with the new wireless automatic test system – Specto-XT

2020

Philip Payne’s Mini Cylinder Luminaire Range accepted into the ICEL Emergency Luminaire Endorsed Product Scheme.

Our Accreditations

After initially securing ISO9002 registered firm status in June 2000, Philip Payne went on to achieve transfer to ISO9001 in December 2003.

In the intervening period, membership was also accepted to The Lighting Industry Association and Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting. Both organisations boast a membership of the leading British and European Lighting Companies shaping innovations in areas of technology, safety and the environment.
