Midland Hotel Morecambe
Designed by the architect Oliver Hill, The Midland was built in 1933 by London, Midland and Scottish Railways. The hotels iconic seahorse sculptures were fashioned by Eric Gill and remain intact following the refurbishment by Urban Splash in 2008 with Philip Payne providing product in both front and back of house areas. The streamline moderne profile emerged during the Art Deco era of the 1930's. This architectural style emphasises long horizontal lines and curves and contains nautical elements, indeed the hotel was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1939 and used it until 1947.
